well, that introduces so more ambiguity in the grammar, as you noted
later down in your note.  but, <> is one of the things i had in mind
when i said that some of the syntax was clunky.  what do people think
about <> notation?  what about ${} with completely new meaning from
$<anything-else>?  we're open to new suggestions, but would really
want to hesitate before taking away another special character.  (in
fact, very few are left.  in fact, all that we think we've got left
are double quote ("), colon (:), and comma (,) as characters that
have no meaning to es and could be used as a new special character.)
