~ and a plea for peace

fundamentally, i agree with Chris. very strongly. Byron feels the same way.
that said, why did Byron and i add ~ and ~user to es, where we both said that
it did not belong in a shell when we had these debates on the rc list? it's
an experiment: we wanted to see if we could add it with no effect outside of
the globber, whether it would be useful, and whether people wanted it to stay
in. we also don't want people who might be potential es users to be turned
off by our ``pedantic, religious sparticism.'' es's globber made it a little
easier to add ~ expansion w/o changing the language than rc's, but that's a
very minor issue.
now, please, nobody ask for job control.
