to make that work, i think es would need first class environments,
which are not impossible, but not a 1.0 feature.

Seriously, this is good, and reminds me of what Scott Schwartz
pointed out back in October of last year:
Continuations are an invaluable abstraction for implementing language
features, even if end users never touch them.
Basing the extensibility of the shell on known-solid general
principles at the bottom level is definitely the way to go.
I have some thoughts on why es isn't like zsh (grin - cf. Paul's
message of yesterday) but will have to reserve those for the moment...
I don't suppose anyone on this list knows anything about CMU TCP/IP
on VMS? :) :) If so, mail me!
