Chet Ramey has a private version of bash that he distributes to the
brave/foolhardy.  That version has a manual, and that manual says <>
truncates.  I had just finished reading that manual last week which is
why my brain was bashed (pun intended).  I sent Chet some mail about this
but no response back yet.

Anyway, enough about bash.  Down that road eventually lies tzsh. :-)

I too am only lukewarm about % because it's reminiscent of job control.
