Well, it certainly makes sense to me that this would be the problem, but it 
didn't help.  All that happens now is:

    ; ^C<return>

    ; ^C
    (shell exits)

Any other suggestions?   If I get the time, I'll try stepping through the 
interrupt in the debugger.
