Re $ instead of <>, the idea of rich return values is new with es, so
it ought to be a new character. Using $ I think will be more confusing
than helpful to people who are heavily into the Unix mindset (like me,
but I'm trying to adjust! :-)  That's why I suggested `:'.

I told Paul that % was out because I was saving it for job control
(Splut!  Yum, tomatoes from the crowd.  As Foghorn Leghorn once said
though, "It's a joke son, a joke!" :-).
