free carets

This struck a chord ... since you did want user's views, I'd agree with
John here ... I never paid much attention to free carets, and I only use
them to prepend things to `prompt' (ie prompt = [$WINDOW]$prompt). Most
other instances of the scripts I have written contain an explicit caret.

PS: I don't know much about BIG programming projects or dealing with
    multitasking/signals/sockets ... etc, but I thought I'd let you
    know that my `gut feeling' is for a minimal shell with most stuff
    in initial.es ... just my 2-penneth
