I wouldn't miss them.  

In scripts, I always put them in when/where I want them, and I usually
do this in interactive use as well.  Saves having to remember when it
would get done for me, and when it wouldn't.  (I don't think I could 
even be sure [I mean *really sure*] of the free caret rules without the 
man page handy)
