I'd say "es+unix sucks", in which case better alternatives are more than
conceivable.  I gather most of the existing rc/es user base is reconciled
to the idea of passing around all this garbage in the environment, but
to me it's one of the less appealing aspects of an otherwise interesting
language.

Depending on computer architecture, maybe es processes could share some
other kind of resource that could carry better information, and leave
the environment to serve in the role for which it's suited.

That could also be an interesting-opportunity/can-of-worms for a different
paradigm of cooperating processes, compared to ordinary UNIX shell stuff.
